Experimentation! :-) I decided to try to do a shader solution for an effect for a magic vine spell. It's built in Unreal 4
I used the red channel as the base shapes. The green channel is used as a time map that lets me control how the vines should grow. The black area to the left is room for improvement :-)
The particle image is a simple array of leaves and whatnot.

I was asked to translate this effect to Unity. Exiting with new tools :-D
